I am reading the original book by 管谟业 and I invite you to do the same. It is a powerful work that adds so much texture to the film.

I love this film when I saw it twenty years ago and I still consider it to be 张艺谋's best three films. 菊豆 and 大红灯笼高高挂 are the other two.
