An introduction to blue camas or Camassia quamash. There are several varieties of blue camas- this is one of the lighter colored varieties. It once was more common before conversion of meadows to agricultural lands and the introduction of livestock. It was a main staple in the diet of Native Americans throughout the west.

  • The white flowered camus is a deadly poison.

Be sure of the roots you dig.

  • We have Camassia scilloides here in central Texas, and pit oven finds suggest they were also eaten by indigenous people here over thousands of years. Like yours, ours are pretty scarce now.
