Another "audio only" vid. I put the same picture on here as I did on Tribal Quest because I couldn't really find one that fits the mood or setting of the song. Enjoy anyway, though!

This is still from the 2008 Minnesota State Honor Band, only it's the 9-10 band, not mine. My friend, Carmen, was in this band. She plays trombone.

Anyway, this song that they played, Symphony No. 1, basically musically describes WWII and some of the bombings. It's set in 4 very short movements: One describes the kind of suspenceful atmosphere of the war; The second one I can't remember what it means; the Third one is titled "Ave Maria", and it kind of shows kind of how "artistic" the bombings seemed when it happened, despite the horror of it all, and the third one is the most dramatic. The low brass holds this long, low note the whole time while the percussion does their "thing" with effects, and the rest of the band whistles, blow through their horns, making weird blowing sounds with their mouths, and the clarinets, flutes, oboes, and others say words like "Help!" or "Firestorm!". They whisper those words at first, but gradually it gets louder and louder until they're basically shouting, and then a couple of people scream. The symphony comes to an eerie end as a single flute plays a low C and rolls in to make the pitch go lower, and tapers it off to silence. She does that 3 times.

...And that is why it is NOT a good idea if you listen to this song at night in the dark. Trust me: I know from experience. *shudders*

And again, sorry if it's hard to hear at times!!

  • when our band did this, we turned out all the lights in the auditorium (except for a few on stage), and then when the tension starts to rise in the third movement, we had one of our flute players leave the stage, go behind the audience, and scream at the top of her lungs.

it was intense. some of the people in the audience screamed too :-P

  • wow, that's awesome! :D

  • we're playing this piece in our band rite now...its so much fun! so emotional! some members of the band are disturbed by this piece! I play the bassoon n i really enjoy playing ave maria...makes the bassoon sound like an organ!! super cool...

  • D8 no fair! i want to play this!! I envy you!

Bassoon's a really nice instrument. I really like the bassoon, and I can see why some members of your band are kinda disturbed by it; I was kinda creeped out by it the first time I listened to it.

  • I played this back in 1987, and have responded to this video with an audio recording of that performance. It truly is a wonderful piece.

  • thanks! ill make a point of listening to it! ^^

    that would be cool

but scaring the audience for the sake of scaring them seems a bit juvenile don't you think?

i mean the piece alone scares me enough

  • I have the utmost respect for Dan buckvich. There is no other piece like this one. It is the only piece in which I was literally scared for my life at one point in the firestorm. Well played

  • well done! truly an awe inspiring piece, and well played! when we did it in Midland, MI, after the climax of the fourth movement the stage went red, giving that much more to the utter dread you feel for the situation! many of us in the band cried upon the final performance.

  • Absolutely wonderful! The last movement gave me chills!

  • we had tehe lights flickering different colors in the middle of it, and screaming and stuff to, and at the end all the lights were out for the last three flute notes

  • Nicely-done, and good audio quality too.. gives me chills almost as much as the one I heard last night done by my own town's band live..

  • were playing this piece now in my band class and i play trumpet,, im mainly listening to different recordings on here to hear the one trumpet split part in movement two.. its such an awesome song to play.
