Congressman and 2012 Presidential candidate Ron Paul has criticized the execution of Osama bin Laden and suggested that the al-Qaeda terrorist mastermind should have been tried in court.

During a radio interview, The Texas Republican said:

"I think things would be done somewhat differently [under a President Paul]. [The killing] was absolutely not necessary."

Paul indicated that the process to take down Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was convicted of masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, among other terrorist acts, was more in keeping with the rule of law.

Paul also pointed out that not only was bin Laden reportedly unarmed during the killing, but that alive, he could have provided a bounty of intelligence information.

On a subsequent appearance on ABC, Paul reiterated his stance.

"I have no qualms about getting him," Paul said. "[But], we could have done it differently. I don't know why we have to embark on a whole new system just because the people get riled up."

Paul indicated that even high-profile Nazi leaders (who murdered far more people than bin Laden) were given a trial at Nuremberg after World War II before being executed.

Paul also highlighted the inconsistencies in the government's account of what actually happened in the Abbottabad compound.
"Every day we hear a different story about exactly what happened," he told ABC.
