Just once a thousand years.........
That is long enough to make people forget about fear....
Tsunami is just a medium that was made by huge power inside the earth.
Tsunami moved,but people didn't move
People did not evaquate to a high place.
Just once a thousand years.........

I never thought I would live to see footage of a tsunami this big. I thought of them in terms of geologic time. The second wave in this clip is just amazing.
I still can't believe they built a nuclear reactor that close to the shore that it could be inundated.

Really? You'd call them ignorant? As if anybody today has seen so much footage of tsunamis? Even in southern India for many generations people thought the ancient temples underwater were an old fishing myth. They saw them with their own eyes when the water receded. Anyone could be forgiven for being brash and laughing in those moments. I hope it helps to keep spirits high and bring fond memories.

@cattillermantea dude nobody (not even people with a lot of experience with tsunamis) knew how devastating this tsunami was going to be. They probably just thought there would be a lot of water damage but in no way absolutely obliterate the town. they were acting according to the assurance they had that things would be fine.

Wow. This is one of the most informative pieces I've seen of this event, from the beginning to the devastating waves building and filling the bay. What made it so sinister is that it starts so unobtrusively, a quiet disturbance in the water, then it keeps coming as giant waves build in the distance. As I understand it, there were two major events that made the tsunamis so destructive: The subduction quake and the rupture of a hardened clay layer of sediment 40 feet deep above the fault line.

Then at 6:33 when tsunami started to go ashore one says "Ohhhh!" laughingly and the other says "This is bad. Huh? Can this be possible? Our shop may be over." But both are not talking in a serious tone, so they may not have thought tsunami could kill people. At 7:05 "This isn't normal." At 7:15 "Saito, go down there (I guess this isn't the ground that's already covered with water) and check out if everybody's already come up here. If not, tell them to do so."
