University of Miami student Antoine Romulus speaks at a Rally for Overtown on campus. I had to edit out some parts because I'd put my hand over the microphone without knowing and it went silent. Sorry!
The University of Miami is building a Life Science Park in Overtown, a historically black impoverished community in Miami. The U has accepted several million dollars in tax money from this community already. This park will surely cause gentrification as property rates inevitably increase and the university moves its own employees into vacated housing, and severe gentrification will occur in the area.
A campus organization known as S.T.A.N.D. (Students Toward A New Democracy) is working with Overtown residents to have the university sign a Sustainable Community Benefits Agreement, or SCBA, which would promise Overtown a certain number of jobs, scholarship opportunities, and other benefits.
This Life Science Park can have either a positive or destructive effect on the community, and as things stand, the University is headed towards the ladder. The U is taking Overtown's money to build for its own benefit...the least they could do is invest back in the community.
