@Charlitos1988 It is possible to take someone down using BOTH strength and technique. If your opponent is 100lbs heavier it still is possible. You obviously won't overhead press him as you assume actual wrestlers mimic the WWE. Now if you're under 180lbs you'll always be at a disadavntage. I am short being 5'7 but being fit and weighing 184 lbs, I can hold my own against bigger guys. But to say strength is not as important as technique and speed you're only setting yourself up for failure.

@Thi5NameTaken Kata Guruma isn't a pick up ... Fireman Carry is a pick up ... it all again delivers us to the unbalance, from what you wrote I understand a small man like Kano could beat that Fukushima doing Kata Guruma but that doesn't mean he pick Fukushima up! The traditional Kata Guruma just let the opponent's body "pass" trough your back (and this transition lasts less than a second) on the other hand Fireman Carry keep the opponent on the back a few seconds before the landing.

"With him there was a certain Fukushima who was not only an advanced student but a large well-built man as well. It was a great source of displeasure to Kano that regardless of how hard he tried he could not beat this Fukushima. He worked day and night pouring over books on wrestling and sumo and finally came up with the kata guruma which one day enabled him to hurl mighty Fukushima to the floor."
Seems to me Kano had no problem with it, unless you think kata guruma isn't one.

@elbowtko judo was created so the weaker and smaller can defeat the bigger and stronger, that's the reason of the UNBALANCE, pick ups are just ... "don't lose time on technique just do some weights to enhance your strength and be able to pick someone up" ... yes I want to see them trying a pick up when their opponent is 100lb heavier!

@Thi5NameTaken but how can you dare to "pick up" someone who is .. let's say ... just 100lb heavier? Judo was created in order the smaller put in trouble the bigger ... do you think Kano could do a pick up against someone bigger? damn! what happen if you find on the streets some chubby big guy what will you do? pick his ass up? mmm?

@Thi5NameTaken The olympics ruin virtually every sport they touch

I think this video is a good example of the reasons for the rule change.

The elegance of much judo is gone when there is no longer a GI. A uchimate becomes a wreslting inner thigh throw (which is not the same) and a kata guruma becomes a firemens carry. This is because it is more efficient to do without a GI.
JUDO with a jacket > wrestling in a jacket
Wreslting with a jacket> current judo with a jacket
You guys just made greco roman judo, congrats.
No. Picukps are perfectly acceptable throws. People like you who only want to see the 'beautiful' and 'classic' throws and want it to be a spectator sport are the same ones responsible for the clusterfuck that comprises Judo's rule system.

You are right, I guess, the current judo looks more like wrestling, sometimes. But hey, I ain't gonna say no to an ippon throwed by te guruma, the throws are perfectly acceptable. Robert Vandewalle, an Belgian Olympic Goldmedalist wrote a book about the technical aspect of pick ups.
