I never understood why they didn't perform live - Karen could have pulled it off with backup singers doing harmony.

@carpentersbh This is the infamous Japan Telethon performance - "...a disastrous live appearance for a Japanese Telethon event, filmed outdoors on the lot of A&M in August 1981. During their segment (the last of the show) and in the uncomfortably hot sunshine, the playback audio cut out midway through their performance of 'Touch Me When We're Dancing'. The ensuing scenes, coupled with Karen's furious reaction, left it obvious to viewers that the whole band had been miming live on TV."

In english now so everybody understands:
I love this video because it shows the 1981 Karen singing live and acapella a little passage of "touch me when we're dancing", and with no backing vocals. After all, in 1981, she would use the playback from the record and lipsync to it, quite often, instead of singing it live. So, that is the moment I like the most. But I just don't get it, whatever happened? Why did she stop in the middle of the song, what happened there? Thanks!

Obrigado!

lol at 1:36 Karen was pissed. I don't think the guy expected that! he is like "Ok ok..." Poor Karen, I'd be pissed off too if I dealt with a person I couldn't understand, to go on a telethon in a 100 degree day just to have everything mess up.

¡Qué relajo tan divino! Gracias por ponerlo. Karen era un mujer tan preciosa, inteligente, divertida y profesional a la vez, ¡qué encanto!

LOL, Richard in his early 80s short shorts...yes, those were in style.
That whole whizzed rewind of the tape while Karen was talking was a sign for me that something was about to go wrong. When the tape failed, the viewer sound kept going because the televised special had the audio superimposed onto what we could see. What we didn't hear was the sound loss from their side, which left the raw clatter of the band miming to the song, with none of them mic'd up and silence from Karen's mic. Which is why Karen shook her fist in anger towards the sound stage.

...then Karen says 'bye Jerry' who was their manager at the time. Nice way to leave them in a lurch.
