In Lesson 1 we connect the router to the modem, reset the modem so it can see the router and they can connect to each other. We connect our home office computer to the router using an ethernet cable. We'll use this computer in Section 3 to configure the router for secure wireless networking.

  • i have usb port in my router? Why for?

  • @pyridoxide Some routers will have a USB which allows you plug in and share a hard drive or printer with all of the computers on your network. Take a look at your routers manual. It will tell you what the USB port can be used for.

  • @hpcbdvd I just got cisco dpc3825 and when i plug in my flash drive im not sure how to share it. Should I use any programs? I could not find anything in the manual.

  • @pyridoxide The USB port on the Cisco dpc3825 is for connecting your modem through USB instead of the usual Ethernet connection. You can't add another device using the USB port.

  • I have my internet provided through ethernet cable. I plug the net cable into a router's ethernet socket and then plug my 2way ethernet cable into router's ethernet socket and my PC's ethernet socket. The router shows that he finds the ethernet, but doesn't transfer to pc somehow

  • @kebubas The Ethernet cable coming from your internet provider's modem needs to go into the router's Internet or WAN port. Another Ethernet cable goes from one of the LAN ports on the router to your computer's Ethernet port. If it is a cable modem that should get you online. If it is a DSL modem you may have to change some settings in the router's configuration utility. Section 3 Lesson 1, which is here on YouTube, shows you how.
