New Yorks Jerry Saltz visited the 2009 Armory Show (open through Sunday), what he calls a big market, a convention, a gigantic sleepover — its also a way for art dealers, hopefully, to sell art. Watch the video to see a Damien Hirst dot painting for $500,000 and what Saltz considers the ugliest piece of art that could possibly be made in 2009.

  • heh heh

    some of them are naked

my concept of art is like christian bales concept of mercy

  • "don`t leave a (brother) hanging" BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • i see jerry as a kind personable guy amoung his art friends. He seems to be speaking to and trying to reach out to an audience who otherwise would pass on the art "thing". I like how is presenting his little art show. interesting and not overwhelming!

  • It should be, as well as a degree in art history. Instead, critics today need nothing but the backing of a paper or journal. This makes them authorities but not experts: a big and scary difference. Censorship is often the result of this lack of expertise. Roberta Smith, his wife, is no better. Vague, meaningless artspeak that even George Orwell couldn't have imagined.

  • When did drawing ability become a requirement for the vocation of art critic?

  • I used to think Saltz was a moron. Now, I think he is cleverly working tongue in cheek...or maybe tongue on something else with the art market. Payola? Sad, though, that he cannot get outside himself. I wonder what masterpieces he has made? Probably none. Drawing lesson? Nope. Read, unlikely. Or maybe he creates rockets from rocks.

  • as the richest artist in the world, he is laughing all the way to the bank. I think thought that he is taming out a little bit, he's been doing the same work for 15 years because he knows it will sell, I wanna see another great collab between him and a Basquiat-like figure. (hinting at a parallel there.)

  • nah, you don't know the right people.

  • I believe you
