The most coveted prize in particle physics - the Higgs boson - may have been glimpsed, say researchers reporting at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.

The particle is a vital factor in science's understanding of the universe, but it has never been observed by experiments.

Finding the Higgs boson is one of the main aims of the $10bn (£6bn) Large Hadron Collider, with two separate experiments at the facility searching for it.

Pallab Ghosh reports.
