Six to ten inches of loosened straw is a very good freeze barrier for plants in the garden. We are expecting a late season freeze so I am covering plants with straw and the very tender plants with a garden blanket over straw. My son covered potato plants (end of video) with heavy plastic. Do Not Do It! I tried that years ago. Water/Rain on top will freeze. Plastic will freeze. Plants will freeze. He has reconsidered and took the plastic off, and covered potato plants with straw. Update video later.

  • Yes straw is the best. I can't get straw so I use a lightweight fleece I buy at the Garden Centre.
