It sucks that Glee ripped off this.

Thankyou for enlightening me :). I admit, it's been a while since I studied law in school, plus I'm not sure on how the particulars would differ for the US. I can't even remember if copyright was one of the modules we covered.... might just have been contract law. Anyhoo, I will see about ripping off some Fox-owned songs - although I doubt I'll be inventing any original arrangements for them now!

The original artist isn't Cyndi Lauper, it's Robert Hazard.

Also, an arrangement is considered a derivative work, which merits its own level of copyright. The original artist would get royalties as well as the author of the new arrangement... But not Fox, those RIAA Babies just love to screw folks while bitching when the tables are turned. Find all fox owned music, rip it off and post videos.

I presume that Glee will be paying the original artist [in this case, Cyndi Lauper] for the use of their song - the problem is that people like Greg technically have no rights to the song because it is a cover [even if they've done something super-inventive with the arrangement]. Clearly Fox is taking advantage of this, because they're too unoriginal to create their own arrangements. Legally? It's permissible, just about. Morally and ethically? Reprehensible.

From what I understand, what Glee/Fox is doing IS illegal, because the copyright terms that allow Greg Laswell to cover this song and post it online mean he can't make money from it. Fox, on the other hand, WILL make money off their cover, including selling the song on itunes.

I'm not an expert or a lawyer, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I thought the legality issue was.

You make a good point about copyright. If you don't protect your intellectual property, you don't get legal recourse when someone rips it off.

On the other hand, since Fox is profiting off of his work, it would be super nice if they could give him the attribution he deserves.

the difference between him and glee is this: he made no money out of it! i just think it is very sad that the show creatives done such a thing, to pass it as their own ideia. because they're the big ones, the ones there are seen, the ones that make money, its sad that it is (or was, in this case at least) out of others people ideias. ps. no ideia they've done 'i follow', must check, but most of all they do relie on hits...

In all fairness, he has no right to be pissed off. He put it up on YouTube without copyright, that makes it fair game, it's not stealing. Sad, but that's the world we live in. I'm sure plenty of people have done his version, just happens that Glee did too. And Glee doesn't "only play hits"; numerous musical numbers, plenty American songs we Brits haven't heard of and a few foreign numbers that weren't big in the US or UK, e.g. Lykke Li- I Follow Rivers.
