Salinas Chinatown Symposium Once and Again 10-15-10

The purpose of the Salinas Chinatown Symposium: Once & Again was to generate awareness of and involvement in the future of the Salinas Chinatown Cultural Center and Museum, the cornerstone of the Chinatown Renewal Project.

This symposium brought together nationally recognized scholars, Dr. Jack Tchen, Co-founder, Museum of Chinese in America, NYC. Sue Lee, Chinese Historical Society, San Francsico, CA. Karin Higa, Curator, Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, CA and Rene Yung, Civic engagement and heritage reclamation artist. As well as community members, students, educators and museum professionals to share ideas, expertise and vision for the Salinas Chinatown Cultural Center and Museum.

Salinas Chinatown offers a unique story of multicultural engagement. Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos lived and worked in the Soledad Street neighborhood beginning in 1893.

The Cultural Center and Museum will chronicle, preserve, and disseminate the stories of the Chinese, Japanese, Filipino and other former and current stakeholders of Chinatown through exhibitions, oral histories, artifacts, memorabilia and cultural events.
