How to Tell if a Watermelon is RIPE to Pick. Here, I harvest a watermelon and cut it right open to show it is ripe. Look for the little curly stem where the watermelon meets the main vine: when that curly stem thing has shriveled up, the watermelon should be ripe enough to pick!

um, sorry to tell you , this watermelon is not ripe. unless this is a breed that is pink when ripe, which i have never heard of?

@bamagym Good point. It was ripe enough to harvest/eat. That year anything that I let go farther along than that was eaten by a groundhog before I could harvest it so given the situation I will opt to harvest on the earlier end of the spectrum. Peace.
