do the AI also make huge armies? I tried with a trainer on game 1 but I could always overwhelm them.

Yes, but only if you put them on higher difficulties.

Before you set up a skirmish game you can set the command point limit by clicking the player options. Other then that just build a ton of slaughter house/farms/mines etc.
