Mating Hummingbirds on my feeder. I have had some complaints from people saying that they are not mating, so if you happen to know what they are doing please feel free to leave a comment.

  • By sleeping like this, hummingbirds can save up to 60% of their available energy. They tend to sleep upside down, this Is probably what your birds in your yard are doing. It is said the birds take a half hour to an hour for them to get out of this state if being. Hope this helps :)

  • @EcoTriGem -When hummingbirds sleep, they go into a hibernation-like state called Torpor (pronounces TOR-per). This is a really deep sleep. Their metabolism will lower to one-fifteenth (1/15) of normal. Their body temperature will drop to the point of becoming hypothermic (about 30 degrees Fahrenheit or 20 degrees Celsius). Their heart rate will drop to about 50 beats per minute. Their breathing will slow to the point that it looks like they have stopped breathing. By sleeping like this, hummin

  • @97airwolf i lol'd

  • is she dead??

  • the hummingbirds in my garden are behaving very strangely.. i thought they were mating for a minute until i realized that the female is playing "dead" supposedly...? she's upside down and appears dead until the male "takes her away" with his beak. does anyone know what this means?

  • I don't actualy know what it is, but I do know it's not mating. Mating for hummingbirds, is a male in front of a female doing a straight line back and forth really fast. You probably won't agree with me, but it's true.

  • Dirty birds! If they're not mating he better have at least bought her dinner first.

  • Oh, and soon there was a tiny nest with 2 little white eggs...

  • yes they are mating or at least attempting to. Why would anyone say they aren't? The female sure doesn't move at all though, almost like she's dead!

  • wow, thats gonna be my new move. the arm flail
