@EcoTriGem -When hummingbirds sleep, they go into a hibernation-like state called Torpor (pronounces TOR-per). This is a really deep sleep. Their metabolism will lower to one-fifteenth (1/15) of normal. Their body temperature will drop to the point of becoming hypothermic (about 30 degrees Fahrenheit or 20 degrees Celsius). the hummingbirds in my garden are behaving very strangely.. i thought they were mating for a minute until i realized that the female is playing "dead" supposedly...? she's upside down and appears dead until the male "takes her away" with his beak. does anyone know what this means?

I don't actualy know what it is, but I do know it's not mating. Mating for hummingbirds, is a male in front of a female doing a straight line back and forth really fast. You probably won't agree with me, but it's true.

yes they are mating or at least attempting to. Why would anyone say they aren't? The female sure doesn't move at all though, almost like she's dead!
