This is the lovely main title of one of the most charming movies ever put to celluloid. National Velvet is the simple story of a young girl, Velvet Brown (Elizabeth Taylor), who dreams of entering her horse The Pi into the world's most prestigious horse race: The Grand National. With the help of young Mi Taylor, a young man with a mysterious past and an excellent knowledge of horses, Velvet just might have a chance at winning her greatest aspiration, as well as finding out who she is along the way.
In more modern takes on this type of tale it would automatically become cheesy schlock without any charm or magic, but with the gentle writing, pitch-perfet score, loveable well-developed characters and engaging locales of National Velvet this movie has ended up being greatly beloved by parents and their children alike.
In a time with so much strife National Velvet is an honest look at family values and will instantly have you nostalgic for the beauty that lies in an innocent childhood.
Directed by: Clarence Brown
Starring: Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney, Ann Revere, Donald Crisp and Angela Lansbury.

Based on the book National Velvet by Enid Bagnold.

Score by Herbert Stothart
*Note: This film features excellent supporting performances from both Ann Revere and Donald Crisp.

  • @TheCatJoker bad rip off of Greensleves

  • Too bad Elizabeth Taylor has died. I read about it in US Magazine and also that included 25 things you do not know about her.

  • Too bad Elizabeth Taylor has died.

  • Anne Revere was a remarkable actress!!

  • I just have to write more! The way he writes for the violins is so stirring. He never fails to write evocative pieces that remind one of childhood and home and...things. I'm so upset that he hasn't been recognized like other great composers like Alfred Newman and Miklos Rosza!

  • I so wish that they'd produce a soundtrack to this film, and other films to which Stothart composed the music. He had such a sympathetic, nostalgic style. Oh well.

  • A classic movie that introduced us all to a classic woman. Good bye Liz. True legends never die.

  • Just saw this. The theme song's amazing. The dramatic part atleast, the whistling part I could do without.

  • =( i love her its REALLY sad that she is gone!!!! she will be loved

  • RIP elizabeth
