On June 19-21, 2009, the ET&WNC RR Historical Society held their annual convention in Banner Elk.

Friday: Business Meeting
Saturday: Linville Depot (photos show how far the building has come) and Tweetsie Railroad (video of photo runbys)
Sunday: Railroad Grade Road (includes Blevins Bridge), Doe River Gorge (video of train ride with photo runby), Tunnel 1 and Bemberg Depot (after official convention).

This was the fifth convention I attended, and it was one of the best.

  • Tim and mine his friend Ken took me(well I drove, they just guided) on a driving tour of the old route. We found a Linville River Boxcar, and then we followed the old route(was a blast when we meet a few cars), then we went to Johnson City and saw the old engine shed(that was interesting). Then we caught some csx, and ns in Elizabethton.

  • I saw the old JC shed about two years ago. While that convention was there, I snapped a picture of an NS train. It was a nice close to that year's meet.

  • The last part of the video is that on some of the original trackage?

    Len.

  • Yes. The diesel train ride is in the Doe River Gorge near Hampton, TN. The tunnel without track is west of there.

  • Are there any plans in retoring track the rst of the line?

    Len.

  • The track is owned by a church camp. If they do get the funds to do it, they'd like to replace the rails to an old top deck truss bridge.

  • Yea, i'm thinking about joining the society. I had a blast at this years convention, well at the one day I came anyways. I definitly wouldn't mind going more often.

  • I'm all the time coming to Johnson City, TN to help out with family. And I have a Great Grandfather whose now passed who served on the ET&WNC RR between 1939 and 1946. And everytime I drive up from NC, I drive on the Old Railroad Grade Rd. I love it. It's amazing!

  • sweet.
