People always ask us how to open their antique fusee pocket watches so here is a video to help everyone navigate their way through a case and locking mechanism seen in most fusee style pocket watches.

According to Wikipedia, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a spiral groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 1400s to the early 1900s to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down.

Please read the Wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusee_(horology)

  • Thank you for this! I was having a devil of a time opening mine. Found this just before I was ready to bring out the butter knife and pry it open. Genius!

  • @gambamama So glad we could help! Thank goodness you didn't grab the butter knife lol. Thanks for watching =)

  • Welcome to the world of antique pocket watches. The US Post Office REALLY does a number on them working BEFORE they touch them, then after they ariive? You have a $200 repair bull on your hands, YES, I Can fix it!

  • Hi,

I recently purchased a watch that is very similar to this one. The guy at the Antiques fair wound it up for me and it worked fine. I purchased the watch and put it in my carrier bag, I then drove home.

I did not look at or touch the watch for at least 24 hours. Today I picked up the watch and it isn't working.

I put the key in and tried to turn it, however it is not moving.

I have not turned the key and can not turn the key.

Is it broken and do you know how to fix it?
