See the pattern written out at: http://jazztrumpetlicks.com/2009/09/major-triad-jazz-pattern-tritone-apart/ This triad pair is really easy to learn and it sounds kind of cool to play over modal stuff. These major triads repeat themselves over and over and are a tritone apart.

If you don't know what a tritone substitution is I'll quickly explain. A tritone is a b5 or #4 from your starting note. In the above trumpet sound sample, I play a C major triad, then go up a tritone to F# major triad.

  • basically if it's a tritone lick, it would be good on a Dominant chord, correct?

  • @1979saxman Yes, since almost anything can be played over dominant chords.

  • That was concert Bb and E because the trumpet is a Bb instrument...right? Those ideas work really well on altered chords with a natural 13 and all of the related tonic diminished chords.

  • Yeah, that's right. If you think in concert pitch it is concert Bb and concert E.

Yes, this does work well on altered chords. Cool.
