Moldavian & Russian Orthodox Christians traditionally break holes in the ice, the cross is thrown into the water, and they dive to recover it.

  • Just watching you, I'm cold!

    Greetings from a scaredy-cat Catholic.

  • @Mascherina1964 You did not see me going in either, eh.

  • We do this in Greece too. It's a wonderful tradition.

  • @gambleor But with less ice, I should think. I have been in Thess/niki for Theophany and seen this in Greece. Actually, it is cold if there is a "Vardari"

  • Man, that lady made the fastest signs of the cross I've ever seen (and I don't blame her) she put most of our Greek grandmas "speed crossing " to shame. But I'd need more than one shot of vodka to jump in there.

  • BRRRRRRR!

  • Oh dear... aren't you guys... COLD?!?!?!

  • In some places the cross is put on one side of a river and several people race to it from the other side. The cross is usually nice and stylized and the winner gets it as a prize.

  • @allsaintsmonastery with much less ice HAHA. Still, the water is cold though.
