MARSTONS MILLS - The body of a man was found in the west-bound lane of Route 28 near the Stop and Shop plaza shortly before 6 a.m. today, according to Barnstable police.
Michael Hagan, who had moved to the Cape about a week ago, was declared dead at Cape Cod Hospital where he was taken by the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department, police said.
According to Barnstable Sgt. Sean Sweeney, police spoke to Hagans mother who lives in Middleboro. She told them that her son did not have a telephone, and that she was not sure of his exact address other than he was living in an apartment over a general store
A police scanner broadcast said Barnstable police are searching for a Toyota, make and model unknown, that may possibly have been involved in the accident. The vehicle would have a broken headlight and be missing its antenna, according to the broadcast.
A 911 call at 5:58 a.m. alerted police to the body, said Sgt. Sean Sweeney. A passerby stopped and blocked traffic in the roadway until police and rescue arrived, he said.
Traffic was diverted through the Stop and Shop plaza as police blocked off the road and the Barnstable police accident reconstruction team photographed and took measurements at the scene. They used red spray paint to circle debris remaining in the road, including a cap with a visor and Patriot's team logo.
Sweeney said initial reports from police at the scene suggest the man may have been hit by a vehicle or a snow plow. Debris around the scene appears to be from a truck or car, he said.
A man who identified himself as an employee in the shopping plaza said he had left the area at midnight and had seen nothing in the area of the accident.
