Ball lightning can pass through anything, but it does not have to.
There are documented cases where ball lightnings seem to hover
along surfaces rather than pass through them. Moreover, there are
documented cases where ball lightnings have exploded with force
or created heat (which is why their possible hazard for humans has
been seriously discussed).
