Puppies
C.A.R.E. has young mixed-breed puppies available for adoption—most will be medium to larger dogs (45-60 pounds); one will likely be small. Puppies under three months are in foster care where they are being socialized.C.A.R.E.'s goal is to place these puppies in homes where there is the greatest potential for a successful adoption for both the puppies and adopters.
If you are interested in adopting one of the puppies, please carefully read the requirements below.
C.A.R.E.'s adoption hours are Sat/Sun noon-3:30 p.m.; Monday-Thursday 6-8 p.m.at the Evanston Animal Shelter. If the puppies are not on premises, potential adopters will be requested to complete an adoption survey and meet with an adoption counselor--all family members should be present--for a preliminary interview.
Please read carefully:
Because of the medical and socialization follow up required, the adoption area will be limited to a range from Andersonville on the south, Highland Park on the north and Niles on the West.
Because early socialization and training is so critical to the development of puppies and young dogs, C.A.R.E. requires that all its adopted puppies attend and graduate from the Dog Obedience Group (DOG) puppy class. C.A.R.E. requires a $100.00 deposit for the Puppy Class, which is refunded with proof of completion of the course. The DOG website is www.dogobediencegroup.com. The DOG adult dog class is also recommended.
All adoptions will be trial adoptions until the puppies are
spayed or neutered at a C.A.R.E.-affiliated veterinarian when
they are four months old. In addition, they will need their
third set of shots and their rabies vaccine. C.A.R.E. will make the appointment at one of our affiliated veterinarians and pay for the puppy shots, spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, and microchip.
It is very important for the puppies to have social interactions with multiple people, places, and things. You will be asked to continue to participate in puppy play groups during the trial adoption period. Groups will be organized evenings and weekends.
Whether you are adopting a puppy from C.A.R.E. or another shelter or rescue group and whether this would be your first puppy or you've raised several puppies before, we recommend that you research perspectives on puppies and the responsibility involved in raising them—Ian Dunbar's site (www.siriuspup.com) where you can get the free download of Before You Get Your Puppy is a good starting place. You can also download After You Get Your Puppy for a nominal fee.
