Eighth Symphony of Anton Bruckner, performed by Bernard Haitink and the Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orkest (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra) in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam
Let's just cut to the chaste. Bernard Haitink is our greatest living conductor. I've listened for nearly 50 years. And he can even get exciting as hell, when it's called for. If it's called for.
The great thing about this interpretation is the phrasing, the way the symphony enfolds and one part leads to the other. Although the dynamics of Bruckner's works often change suddenly, they should be related to each other. Often, whe loud passages overpower the less articulated sections. Haitink shows (at least to my ears), that they don't have to.
Many thanks to uploader Zwijnhaat (what's in a name) for his noble work. I listen almost every day to this great performance, which I witnessed when recorded. After that I was walking on clouds at the Museumplein... .
@grabit1 agree and agree and agree. I've only been listening to them for 35 years, but I'm not as old as you :)

@banjocracy Same way I do. We'll live beyond our earthly bounds. Bruckner knew that, and Haitink is his best 20th Century messenger to remind us.

I love Haitink's Mahler but Celibidache's Bruckner is peerless. The tempo is way too fast for me here.
