WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Representative Tom McClintock (CA-04) made the following remarks during a debate in the House of Representatives today about H.R. 3534 (Clear Act). In his remarks the Congressman discussed the response to the oil spill in the Gulf:

"Before we add more bureaucracies to the equation, shouldn't we ask how the existing ones did?

"The administration ignored the contingency plan that NOAA's former Oil Spill Response Coordinator says could have burned off 95 percent of the oil spill from day one. It took them eight days to do a test burn.

"In the two weeks after the spill, 13 countries offered the assistance of their surface oil skimmers. The administration told them "thanks but no thanks."

"As the oil approached shore, the Administration shut down oil skimming barges for lack of life jackets. It never occurred to them to simply bring out more life jackets.

"Skimmers that could have removed 95 percent of surface oil were forbidden by the EPA for a month because they didn't remove 99.9985 percent.

"For more than a month, the governors of the states begged the administration for permission to take emergency action to protect their shorelines, to no avail.

"And now we want more bureaucrats?

"The problem is not a lack of bureaucracy. The problem is a tangled mess of rigid regulations, political posturing, contradictory edicts and administrative incompetence that produced an emergency response worthy of the Keystone Cops. More of the same is not the answer. "My advice to this administration and its Congressional majority is this: if you can't lead and won't follow -- then get out of the way."

  • Yes!!! Congressman McClintock, you have done it again! You are one of only a handful willing to say what needs to be said, unapologetically and uninhibeted. Thank you!!!

  • @HousbinPharteen1

Clearly this is far beyond your pay grade. Burn off is the most efficient and the cleanest way to dispose of spilled oil. You should really get your facts straight

so that you don't look ignorant.

The Obama admin. refused to intervene with federal assets in a timely manner.

It is remarkable that people like you run off at the mouth with no basis in reality.

Really? you should research facts before you run your ignorant fingers across your key board, may I suggest independent thought and critical thinking instead of regurgitating opinions fed to you by the media and nefarious politicians.

  • @konagnu Give me those facts there, or ya know be quiet! "Obama refused to intervene"????? LMAO that's funny! It was BP's job to clean it not ours.

  • Burning oil is far more worse to the environment and to people then just letting it wash ashore then cleaning it up. Also the Obama administration didn't turn down help, BP did! Bp was in charge of the clean up, not the government. They turned down help from those countries! Mr. McClintock is great at lying as any politician is!

  • After hearing this Congressmen, I now believe that the BP oil spill was an act of "Chemical Warfare" declared on the American people and the environment of the Gulf of Mexico. This was done by Leaders in the NEW WORLD ORDER movement, and was what amounted to an assualt on our people and the environment. I do not believe that this administration or BP did not know what they were doing when they failed to use resources, used a banned toxic chemical and lied to the American people.

  • yeah it's great he said what he said. But it fell on deaf ears. So what's the point?

  • That's great! He is right!

  • that's my congressman... you tell them Tom

  • I didn't know they had Republicans in California anymore. Good one, sir!
