Smith Point , a Long Island peninsula extending into Bellport Bay on the South Shore connects to Fire Island National Seashore with a drawbridge built in 1955. This Suffolk County Park is a summer favorite for camping, fishing, "beaching", and is also the site of TWA Flight 800 International Memorial. Fire Island is a barrier island protecting 31 miles of Long Island from the Atlantic Ocean. It separated from the mainland to the west at Jones Beach Island in 1683 and to the east at Southhampton in 1931. Fire Island has 491 permanent residents (none at Smith Point) and hundreds of thousands of summer residents and day trippers who ferry over from Bayshore, and Patchogue.
