The Drill Team started in 1956 as the Woodrow Wilson Dolls. It was the last act of original principal G. L. "Pop" Ashburn who presided from 1928 to 1956. One year later the name was changed to "Sweethearts" in reference to the school's proverb over the auditorium stage "Keep Thy Heart With All Diligence". Gussie Nell Davis, founder of the Kilgore Rangerettes, designed the uniforms and routines. She also served as a judge for try-outs.
In the 1930s and 40s the school had a girl's drum and bugle corps called "The Crusaders" as Woodrow Wilson was a crusader for world peace.
