  • SoccerDJRob, he said HF SSB and USB. Where did he say UHF? And someone else said MMSI's COULD belong to more then 1 vsl. Well, Inmarsat B or M ship earth stations were already using these which has created a problem issuing new ID's. So, that might be true but no more true then someone getting the same phone number as you have. I've never heard of a duplicate ID causing problems. He sounds more like an ET than a RM/TC.

  • What a joke!!!!!!!!!

DSC radio's automatically relay distress alerts from boat to boat. INCORRECT

DSC radio's will transmit DSC data if they don't have an MMSI. INCORRECT

DSC radio's will simultaneously transmit DSC data and voice. INCORRECT

The MMSI is specific to the radio itself, there cannot be two MMSI's that are the same. INCORRECT

You can send messages from boat to boat just like text messaging. INCORRECT.

What constitutes a mayday/distress situation is not written policy. INCORRECT

  • @SoccerDJRob

There is no UHF frequencies used for Distress Alerting in Maritime. VHF radio is used, when in Sea Area A1, as your primary means of ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship alerting. When in Sea Areas A2, A3, and A4, the VHF system works as a short range, ship-to-ship system ONLY.

  • This man is incorrect on a few points.

    1) A DSC radio will stop the automatic repetition of the Distress Alert upon reception of a DSC acknowledgement from ANY station, not just a Coastal Station.

    2) DSC radios do NOT automatically relay distress alerts. That is a Distress Priority signal that can only be sent with the Master's authorization.

  • The gentleman made an error. A DSC radio will stop the automatic repetition of the distress alert upon reception of a DSC acknowledgement signal from ANY station, no just a Coast station.

  • what is more common or used as the primary use uhf or vhf?

  • what is more common or used uhf or vhf?

  • This is a intro only. Why not learn and practive marine VHF DSC radio on your PC with a simulator?

See a getting started on YouTube from Mercator Publishing. Not only distress, but also Urgency and Safety call. And routine calls to other boats and marinas.

  • wow this is cool!
