"Jeannie went to jail this morning for not leaving camp. Many stayed at SafeGround Pilgrimage church last night. No church tonight" ~ [http://bit.ly/wsQqzz]

This past week Jeannie and Eli [http://bit.ly/AzJIik] were arrested in Sacramento for being homeless. They lived along with about 125 other homeless people in an organized tent community called Safe Ground [http://www.safegroundsac.org]

Jeannie worked as an in-home nurse. She lost her job and her place to live on the same day. Since April she has been living in a tent in Sacramento.

Kind of ironic Jeannie talks about the city counsel changes needed and the prospects of Sacramento allowing the campers to have a place to live is only days before they were forced to move.

The old hippie in me loves the self-governing tent city model, but really the only reason a tent community even exists is because homeless services has failed to provide adequate support.

What are your thoughts on this controversial issue?

Special thanks to Safe Ground http://www.safegroundsac.org

  • @b1p0l4rt I was homeless there to --- Oceanside and Escondido. Peace and love to you.

  • thanks for doing these interviews!! you are doing amazing work.

  • This is it; the human spirit. The determination to succeed against the odd, to protect each other from the disasters of life and to celebrate when we do succeed. This woman, Jeannie, is the embodiment of all of these qualities. I wish her, and all the citizens of her wonderful tent city, all the best.

  • I feel bad for those people but... I don't believe the government has the right to just "give" people anything. She spoke of electricians and other qualified people living there. The issue we should be talking about is how we as a people have allowed the government to create a society where people depend on the government.. 50 yrs of failed policy in the name of poverty has done nothing but create more poverty while detroying the idividuals American pride.

  • It is an illegal consideration to lend something that has no substance behind it. If we do not change this system we allow this to continue. A profit based system considers profit before life.

Obviously, god is not changing this. Humans must stand and make the change.

  • If she is a Registered Nurse, she can work anywhere. Doing nursing care without the RN designation, is home-care.

  • U.S realty in these days

  • maybe churches need to take the lead and use their buildings to house people. create communities that live in the church. they are empty while people sufferr on the streets...that is not right.

  • still waiting to hear back from the aclu on my question on what the aclu is doing...or likely NOT doing to sue the devil government over their attacks on the homeless...not holding my breath

  • @Thenewyorkcritic I have no idea to be honest w/ u, I mean whatever activities they r doing on those tents whether it might be drugs or not. It's the fact that, since it looks like state property & might be a nature preserve for example. Who wants 2 have homeless people harrass visitors & workers there for money, moist of these homeless people r either due to economy or just have serious mental problems. I wish they would stay, but what about when that place is covered in snow & hot summers.
