Wide World of Sports was required viewing Saturday afternoons in America. For two decades we watched this young man emblazoned with the caption "The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat", earning a fond spot in all our hearts! Certainly a fine representation of the sporting spirit! He was honored at the 25th Anniversary Special for the ABC network show. Only he, and the 1980 US Olympics Hockey team received a standing ovation, out of the hundreds of sport lumenaries present that night! We still think of him often!!!

  • The American commentary of the crash is hilarious. "Look at him go!... Oh!... Ohhhhhhhh, baby!"

  • It was quite an exciting moment!! It is quite funny really to strap on a pair of ski's and then throw yourself down a quarter mile slide, and into the air!!! lol Now we have the poor luge sleder from Georgia to remember. This one had a much happier ending.......

  • That Sking accident on "ABC Wide World Of Sports" is forever the trademark of the show.

Wow, I've missed "ABC Wide World Of Sports".

"The Thrill Of Victory" & "The Agony Of Defeat".

  • Yes, the volume of sports broadcasting has increased exponentially, but the quality certainly hasn't......so many wonderful Saturday afternoons!!! best wishes

  • Like most Americans the Wide World of Sports was must a must see for me as a kid. With the loss of Jim Mckay last night. I thought it was a good time to relive this moment in American TV. RIP Jim you will be missed.

  • Thanks for remembering him, and taking time to post! I answered the above comment with my thoughts....but like Christopher Bowmans untimely death, this is wrenching many tears from skating hearts around the country!! best wishes

  • That infamous "Agony of Defeat" skiing accident took place in Oberstdorf, Germany

  • "Look at him go!... Oh!... Ohhhhhhhh, baby!"

  • Thats My Uncle!!!!! well, distant uncle,,, no lie,,,, he is on my moms side of the family.

  • Can you Help?

At some point during the 1980 Winter Olympic Broadcast (US), Jim McKay had an "acting" part in a humorous little skit--the sketch had two (very tough!) hockey players sitting in the penalty box, discussing the book one of them was authoring: A book about cooking (I kid you not)!

They managed to work themselves into a brawl over a disagreement about...get this...the "proper temperature at which to cook a souffle!!!"

A brilliant little skit I would dearly love to see again.

  • Not sure why it is sooo captivating! I never get tired of looking at it!!! best wishes
