I had never heard this.
People are too quick to say that one version is better than another. As long as the artist has something to say, multiple versions of the same song can be equally beautiful.

@leftyodoul that may because the song was not written for the movie but about Fred Neil himself. Midnight Cowboy uses the song perfectly however. Its almost as if the movie was made around this great song.
