Courtney Brown, Ph.D., is a mathematician and social scientist working at Emory University. This entertaining video describes his advice to undergraduate and graduate students who may be interested in combining study in the social sciences with study in mathematics and statistics. He describes how people who study societies using math and statistics often have very interesting lives, and their job prospects are often very good, both in academia and the corporate world.

  • Dr. Brown's videos are well worth the investment of your time. He knows the material and he knows how to teach. I wish I could afford the tuition at Emory.

  • Thank you Dr. Brown. I've benefited from your R programming videos as well.

  • @BR177 36 same here.

  • wow this has been really interesting and informative. im thinking about majoring in mathematics and communications. I am by no means a genius in math but after taking one accelerated course in algebra (which I didn't bother to learn in hs because I didn't have any interest) I feel like I am a much sharper and analytical thinker. I can definitely see the benefits of learning and applying math to anything in life.

  • I agree - but there are also a great many people with extremely boring lives that use computers and statistics on a daily basis: think quantitative finance.

  • I AGREE... I TOTALLY AGREE. Now I know I am on the right path. THANK YOU DR. COURTNEY. AND GOD BLESS YOU SIR.

  • completely complete agree!! I was born and brought up in India and I can agree to every single comment about India. 'Geek' is a complement!

  • What if I have my BS in Statistics and I can't find a job

  • I just happened to come across this brotha searching for podcast lectures on Rastafarianism, and came upon his discussion on Bob Marley and his Manifesto Politics in Music series. And I was hooked!

  • cool advice I am 32 and I already think I have spent my life doing nothing
