That's true but would they have got as perfect a Rhett as Darius turned out to be? They'd auditioned in America and the UK without success, when the musical director for the 10th anniversary of Chicago suggested Darius should audition. Sir Trevor Nunn was bowled over by that bass baritone voice that most people in the UK have heard for the first time on the Popstar to Operastar show.
How can you know that a musical version of GWTW never played anywhere in New York? The guy said he saw "a" production of "a musical" of Gone With the Wind; he didn't say he saw "this" production. "Scarlett," for instance, is a musical version that's been around since 1972, and even though it never played Broadway, it's likely it played at some New York theatre at some point.

perhaps they would have fared better had the show been produced in America, since its an American story.

At 3.43 someone's whistling one of the songs from the show backstage! That's supposed to be unlucky............... and the show closed early.

Okay, I did two seconds of research, and I can't find any evidence "Scarlett" ever played in New York. So, the guy probably is a liar. ;)
