Here is a sneak peak of the Remarkable Current Tunisian Revolution Tour short film. This cultural exchange was funded by the U.S. Department of State and supported by the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia.
Press Release for the Tour...
We have embraced the chance to show that America values the dignity of the street vendor in Tunisia more than the raw power of the dictator." -- President Obama (May 19th address in Washington, D.C.)
State Department Sends American Hip Hop Music Collective Remarkable Current to Join 'Rock the Tunisian Vote' As Cultural Ambassadors
May 27th- June 4th 2011
The democratic awakening sweeping North Africa was born in Tunisia. The self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi, a marginalized, unemployed, university graduate sparked cascading protests that led the 23-year president to flee the country on January 14th. That single act of protest inspired the masses in Egypt, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen & Libya in the weeks and months that have followed to take to the streets and demand a change in their countries. The ripple effects of this movement of the people can be felt worldwide as we witness the re-invigoration of the labor movements here at home.
As Tunisia prepares for it's free and fair democratic election the State Department has called upon Remarkable Current to head to Tunisia in their official capacity as Goodwill Ambassadors. Remarkable Current will be touring Tunisia with the 'Rock the Tunisian Vote!' tour.
Remarkable Current will hit the three major cities of Tunis, Sousse, and Sfax during their exciting ten-day trip. They are scheduled to visit Tunisian youth programs and many important Tunisian institutions and to hold daily workshops with local Tunisian rappers. The tour also promises collaborations and performances with local Tunisian artists in Concert that are sure to make history!
Hip-hop and rap played a large part in the Tunisian revolution as rap songs decrying the corruption of the regime became the people's unofficial anthems. The timing and atmosphere here are historic. With the mission to build understanding and awareness through musical friendships and collaborations Remarkable Current is proud to be invited to witness this monumental moment. These worldwide connections are more important and relevant today then ever before, they are the tools that will lead us to a more fruitful conversation and a more peaceful tomorrow.
