Now that we had a permaculture design in place, the next step was to try to implement it. It took us until August to get everything together, but we got much of what we wanted done on the day.
We mainly worked at the back of the site, digging rocks out of the dirt and replacing it with proper soil. The chipper was used to shred old newspapers and catalogues, which are now returned to the soil. (More mulch has gone on top since.) There were only minor changes at the front of the site, involving a bit of pruning and planting.
The term "permablitz" is a portmanteau based on the title of the garden makeover TV show "Backyard Blitz", but with a specific focus on permaculture principles. A number of green organisations, who organise their own working bees for working on someone's premises, have started using the term "permablitz".
Many thanks to Andrew Hill and David Priest for their help.
