This reminds you of Penda and Ramatoulaye, those two feisty women in Sembene Ousmane's God's Bits of Wood (Les Bouts de bois de Dieu)! It would be something to really cheer about if women's activism is still alive in Senegal. Which also reminds me of Moolade, Ousmane's last movie: maybe feminism never really died in Senegal after all. Nice take through music! At some point, hopefully, African music from different countries will be available across the continent, regardless of language.

It is interesting that the latest wave of feminism in the performing arts has sprung from predominantly Muslim parts of Africa, from Egypt to Senegal and Mauritania. Eccomic and social advancement is well-served by using the talents of everyt person regardless of gender. Just look at the difference between Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Perhaps the women creating this music understand that Islam was the first world religion to codify the legal rights of women. I like this trend in music.

@randriamandresy Given the level of sophistication you display, most people don't much care what you think, if you think at all. Are you by chance intimidated by strong women?
-
@olajinka "Wow!" was also my first thought when I first saw one of her videos. That the theme was strongly feminist was immediately apparent. This is a lady who knows what she is worth, and what women in general are worth to society. She lives up to the traditions of the griot as musician and lecturer. This seems to be a rising tide in music in Senegal, Guinea and Mali, perhaps even into Mauritania (Google Maalouma mint Meidah.) It has brought some interesting music to the world.

Wow. I love the Senegalese and their culture anyway. But I really love this video. What's so special about it is that you don't even have to understand the language to understand what she's talking about....sexism for one. She carries herself like royalty and so should all women. She's tall, beautiful, well dressed, and singing well. I love this!
