LBS Hosts UK Prime Minister David Cameron on Trade Mission to NigeriaTuesday, July 19, 2011
UK Prime Minister, the Right Honourable David Cameron, MP, on his trade mission to Nigeria, has told Africans to take hold of opportunities in the continent to trade, grow and raise living standards of millions of people in poverty.
He said this today in a speech he delivered at Lagos Business School, Pan-African University to the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Nigerian business leaders, faculty, staff and alumni of LBS.
Cameron expressed that both governments can work together to make the most of the opportunities available to "make this the African moment". He said the three things needed for economic progress were aid, trade and political reforms.
He said: "This is a time for the whole of Africa to meet the aspirations of its people. A time when aid, trade and democracy can come together to offer a new future for Africa and its people."
Commenting on the ways African technology entrepreneurs are creating jobs and wealth across the continent, the Prime Minister expressed his belief that with the new generation of political and business leaders there was the opportunity to use trade to transform the lives of Africans like never before.
Dean of LBS, Dr Enase Okonedo, agreeing with Cameron's views, said that Africans can only reap these opportunities if they are equipped to do so.
She said: "It is one thing for us to say we want to enthrone good governance, but are we developing leaders that can enthrone good governance? Do we have leaders that understand the full consequences of aid and how the benefits can be realised?"
On the role of business schools in this regard, Okonedo explained that in addition to imparting in future leaders the skills that are needed for good governance, business schools should instill in them the values that are important.
"LBS is positioned to develop the kind of leaders Africa needs, because of the emphasis we place in our curriculum on the importance of integrity, business ethics, accountability and servant-leadership", she added.
