A head knife, or straight razor, can be sharpened by warming up a leather strap, keeping the knife to the strap, rolling the blade back and forth on the leather, and making sure to get the whole blade. Sharpen a head knife once every five or six years with insight from a knife grinding specialist in this free video on sharpening knives.

  • This is barely even a beginning to the world of Straight razor Honing and Maintenance in fact this is actually very mis-leading in it's simplistic view...

  • @gssixgun Oh I know this vid sux and there is more to it than shown. But there is a happy medium as well. I have been to SRP and seen some people describe spending several hours on stones and honing a blade. Maybe my face is tougher than theirs or maybe I am blissfully ignorant to have a simple method that does just what I need and nothing more.

  • @gssixgun Yes, and one can also overcomplicate taking a piss on a fence to the point they have to have an hour prep time to do it.

  • @maximon72

Hint, straightrazorplace google that and start there if you are really interested in learning about Straight Razor shaving, honing, stropping... I could type for hours about the subject, in fact I have typed for hours on it...

  • instead of doingthe x pattern, go on ebay and pay 20 pounds/dollars or so and buy an xtra wide strop

the extra wide strop are 3 inches wide and should be wide enough that you can simply strop with straight up and straight down movements

  • @gssixgun how so?

  • But why show people how it works? You get less costomers :P

  • Press 8 for: "Stroke it 100 times."

  • Nooooooo, you don't "move back and forth", you do an X pattern stroke.

  • @cokebeareroverdose Stropping (what the guy is doing) does not sharpen the razor. A strop can be used to sharpen a razor, but not without a paste or some kind of addition to the leather that will remove metal from the razor.

  • He gets a "feeling".. . rofl...
