Here's a quick video of my PROTOTYPE 'Stand-Alone' 12VDC powered SONOS in operation. It's based on a SONOS ZP80 but it's been made to run off DC power without the need for a network connection or external file storage mainly for an in-car setup but could also be used for a flexible & easy-to-use music source for parties and 'music-playing' DJ's (ie. not 'real' DJ's). Multiple ZonePlayers AND Controllers have been tested & can be used just like a normal SONOS setup in a house. It's just as fun, fast & reliable as the normal SONOS system too ! Imagine this in your car ?!?
It's still only VERY early days for this prototype and although it has worked perfectly before I'm currently battling with a lack of current from the 5V DC Power Supply feeding the 2.5" HDD so I've had to use the original 240V plugpack supply until I can sort that problem out. I suspect I've got a faulty PSU on my hands :( Once that's fixed it will basically be ready to test in the car (mainly for super-high temps) and once I know it works in that environment I'll start building up my first 'real' DIY version.
Here's a time-line of what happens in the clip:
0.00 - All power off, CR cannot locate ZP
0.02 - Plug in 2.5" HDD PSU
0.05 - Switch on main 12VDC PSU (Click)
0.10 - View of 'inCAR SONOS' booting
0.40 - CR connects to ZP & displays ZP name on screen
0.50 - Music selected from files on local HDD inside the 'inCAR SONOS' box
1.17 - Track starts playing
1.28 - HDD access LED flashing on front panel of 'inCAR SONOS'
2.03 - 'Lets change to another track'
2.46 - Next track starts
3.15 - 'inCAR SONOS' flyover
That's it for now. Sorry about the A/V quality, it's all I could do with the limited time I had plus my home-made test-bench amp is picking up a lot of RFI from one of the 12V PSU's I'm using. Not to worry though because it sounds great through another Amp I used a few weeks ago.
I'd better fly ...
Seeya :)
