Playing Battletoads the way it was meant to be played! A single segment, no warps, no cheats, no states, no slowdown and NO CHEESINESS run! The question has been asked many times - Is this Battletoads? For once, it actually is!
LEVEL 3 - Turbo Tunnel
DIFFICULTY - 3/10 (Don't fool yourself - It's one of the easier ones)
MAJOR THREATS - Carelessness, which gets you killed. The last part is famous for stopping many, many Battletoads players.
DEATHS - 1 (At the start of the Pink area. Shaaaaame!)
The Turbo Tunnel is the first somewhat difficult level of Battletoads and is what separates the casual gamer from someone with extreme determination or incredible gaming skills. Getting it on your first run is pretty much impossible, but after getting to some of the harder levels it's shameful to lose even one life in this level... Which I did. I got careless and completely forgot just how fast those barriers were going to appear. At least I made up for it by beating the final part without any trouble.
For the eager newbies out there - The last part all comes down to a rhythm of moving up and down. Once you learn that rhythm, you'll never forget it. It's like learning to ride a bike... Moving at over 300 KM/H against several well-placed obstacles.
LEVEL 4 - Arctic Caverns
DIFFICULTY - 4/10
MAJOR THREATS - Low-ceiling jump due to a glitch and the leaping walls at the end.
DEATHS - 3 (Low-ceiling jump. There is no excuse, I completely forgot how to deal with that part. Also a leaping wall near the end, just to show their massive hit-detection)
I love this level. Lots of 'puzzles' and fun obstacles, while not being completely impossible. Actually, Stage 4 is not so hard after you get to know it, though one of the game's only glitches is there - If you try to headbutt over a certain spikepit with an icecube coming from behind you, 70% of the times you'll get stuck, get hit and fall down to the spikes. A normal jump works, but it's harder... And a lot safer.
The problem I ran into is that I forgot that I can't headbutt until the very last moment - So I ran instead. Turns out that gets the 'toad AIRBORNE so he didn't jump when I hit the button! So, the next time I didn't start running and tried a normal jump - That didn't work either. Fairly frustrated I tried running again, and this time it worked.
Got hit by a few things too, that all took off two units of life. Taking off two units of life is actually extremely generous - About 5% of the things from now that level will take off half your life and the remaining 95% will be instant death. And I'm talking FAST, UNPREDICTABLE THINGS!
The walls at the end also got me - See how I die even though I'm just barely touching it? And no, you can't jump over them since there's an invisible wall above them blocking you. To jump above the blue spiked shell TWICE IN ONE JUMP while not touching THE SPIKES ABOVE YOU and moving so fast that you GET UNDER THE WALL on a SLIPPERY LEVEL takes skill.
Also, headbutting an icecube in a way that it flies back and hits me in the head is Failblog material right there -_-
