Road number 184 is now out of the bluenose and into the retro 1997-era northeastern direct paint. This was never a unIversal scheme at Amtrak, it was hit or miss. Road number 66 is in the 70s style of bicentennial stripes, a more universal scheme back then, but adapted specifically now to the slant-nosed GE Genesis design which did not exist back then. The reflectorized white stripe (such as #145 has) was added later, and those varieties carried over through 1997 on GE's and until 2002 on the last of the remaining EMD's.

The horn on 71 sounds pretty bad. 71 and 17 went to Boston on the Lakeshore a couple of days after this video. 66 and 184 went to Washington DC on the Capitol Limited later the same day of this video.

Here is an edited version of the vid with the still photos at the end. It will load and play quicker than the raw video posted earlier. Note: The GE data stickers are repops, they are not original.

The P42's (and dualmodes) that got this northeastern paint originally were mostly those assigned new to New Haven in 1997 and 1998. Two new P42's, #121 and #122, delivered in 2000 to replace a couple of P40's destroyed at Bourbonnais, Illinois in 1999 also had a variety of it. The originally went to the pacific coast starlight pool.

A northeast variant had also been used earlier on passenger cars and electrics in the northeast, but not on the western diesels. It was a short-lived marketing scheme.

Amtrak repainted all but one of its P40s into the short-lived 1997 scheme, most of the New Orleans and Michigan P42's, and a bunch of wreck repairs over the 1997-2000 period. By the end of 2000 it was out of favor....the bluenose took over and everything was repainted again. The last P42 to have it (#82) was repainted out of this scheme in 2006 after it's consist derailed in Mississippi.

There are still some stored P40s with the northeast direct paint in storage, but those pulled from storage and refurbed last year were changed out of it and over to the bluenose (except of course 822).

So there are no known active road engines left in 66's mid-70's variant, and only #184 and the stored P40's left in Delaware to remind us that Amtrak ever had the "northeast direct" livery.

  • Excellent question. Amtrak's heavy maintenance shop is at Beech Grove, Indiana, and the Hoosier State frequently hauls extra deadhead locomotives and cars to and from its Indianapolis terminal. There is a yard job that moves them between the Indy passenger station and Beech Grove.

  • Yep, most of the passenger cars got a revised 1997-style restriping. Originally it was referred to by Amtrak as "northeast direct," but now who knows. But, in the video you will see one that didn't get restriped, it is the buffer car that is unique to the Hoosier State. It is still in the older 70's bicentennial style stripes. The Hoosier State carries a combination of deadhead equipment on it most days. Only the last two cars (heritage) are revenue coaches.

  • Heard it was in New Orleans today.

  • 822/406 are back in Chicago this morning. Could be heading your way tonight, but unfortunately I don't have any way of knowing unless one of the Chicago guys happens to chime in with an update.
