I know some guys who have tried using the HVX for skating. They ran into two problems: It's a little bit heavy for long single-shot runs, and it's easy to blow through your P2 cards if you're shooting a lot of footage. If you can afford a pile of P2 cards, it's great. If not, and HDV camera like the Sony Z1U or even Z7U is probably a better choice, even though HDV isn't the greatest format. For short films, I prefer the HVX hands down though.
