The legendary Al Collins -- also known as Jazzbo (later Jazzbeaux) during his illustrious career at New York's WNEW and San Francisco's KSFO. In this audio montage by Peter Stern, Jazzbeaux is heard in the Purple Grotto, his fantasy wonderland. Al also worked at KGO, KMPX, KAPX, KTIM and KCSM in the Bay Area. Jazzbeaux was the greatest. He used to play a New Orleans jazz style rendition of California Here I Come. Anybody know who did it? Thanks for posting this.

In 1963, my mom and I attended a chilly, after dark open-to-the-public party hosted by Jazzbo in the ruins of the recently demolished Fox Theater on Market St. in San Francisco. Lots of great music and goofiness, as only Al could provide. We laughed and shivered for hours. But then the ultimate! Jazzbo had us all raise our right hands and speak those immortal words…..”I don’t got to show you no stinkin’ badges”. Yes, making mom and me....official Banditos!!!!
RIP, buddy. Miss you.

Jazzbeaux was the best. He was on LA radio briefly in the 60's and I was, rather, am a fan. I loved the music and being drawn in by his discription of the Purple Grotto.
