Man, the musical structure is so similar to many great, moving forms of music. Take the blues for example, or the Grateful Dead. Flamenco is very much improv too. Just shows what a universal language music truly can be.

I don't know about all North Indian Classical music, but Ragas consist of a lot of improvisation (and I do mean a lot) around a central set of composed material and a certain mood or feeling. That's as far as my understanding goes anyway. I took up the Sitar as part of my music course this year, and it's amazing. Did an exam in it the other day (went well), but we haven't even scratched the surface yet, having only been playing for ten weeks.
