"I Confess" is probably one of my top 3 favorite Hitchcock movies. I really love the dark gloomy atmosphere of Quebec, the mystery, the thrilling musical score and of course the acting is superb, too.
This video focuses on Montgomery Clift's character, the catholic priest Michael Logan, who learns about a murder in a confession, the murderer, who is working in the church, confesses to him about it and ever since that confession the murderer really feels he is now safe and keeps emotionally blackmailing the priest whenever their paths cross.
Michael who is a high morality person and has no intention to give the murderer in because of the confession's oath, is slowly becoming the main suspect in the murder, especially that he has the supposed reasons to kill the man, who could have revealed his past love affair with a married woman.
He is brought to trial and is found not guilty, though the whole town bullies him and tries to hurt him physically and emotionally by forcing him remove his cassock. Then the murderer's wife who feels guilty for the innocent man's suffer runs toward Michael and tells everyone he is innocent and her husband is the real killer. Her husband then shoots her dead.
In the last confrontation with the police, the killer tries to shoot Michael but then is killed by the police. The film ends as the killer dies in Michael's arms and the priest forgives him and reads the last prayer over his dead body.
I think Monty's acting in this movie is really brilliant and his face can tell us everything he (the priest) is thinking but cannot say. We can really see how tormented and thorn he is by the secret he has to keep. His facial expressions are amazing and we don't even need him to say anything to understand his thoughts, just like in silent movies. That's why I chose this musical piece from "Requiem For A Dream" soundtrack to accompany my video.
Enjoy!!!!!

  • I, this is a fantastic tribute to Montgomery Clift! I think I have most of his films, including Freud! I will send you a link to a film you may not have... :)

Thank you Ellen. This is only a small tribute to Monty in this particular film, and I plan to make another tribute to him including ALL his movies sometime in the future. I think I only miss one movie so far. I shall watch Freud really soon, maybe this week, it really sounds like a great one.

  • Excellent description of the movie. I was a bit young when this came out but I'll have to find it as I'm somewhat of a Hitchcock fan. Thanks for sharing!

OMG yes he totally is. His performances are always very convincing, coming from the bottom of his heart and never over the top. One of the finest actors ever IMO
