I live in the UK. We pay for health cover in our taxes. The system works and is relatively cheap. It is available to everyone. No politician would ever dare to call for the destruction of the National Health Service. It gets better all the time.

My great grandfather lives in the UK and it doesn't seem like the system is working out for him so well.

Critics complain that a public plan has an inherent advantage over private plans because the public plan won't have to show profits. But plenty of private plans are already not-for-profit. And if nonprofit plans can offer high-quality healthcare more cheaply than for-profit plans, why should for-profit plans be coddled? The public plan would merely force profit-making private plans to take whatever steps were necessary to become more competitive., that's a plus.

really both republicans and democrats are morphing into a homogenized party of greedy grasping fools. Think about it, most of the money we spend on health care is because of regulation paperwork and insurance, actual health care would be affordable without that and dont even get me started on big pharma and there marketing crap adding tons of money to our drugs real health care reform would get rid of all that then we would be able to afford health care on our salaries what a concept.

Of course private companies dont want the goverment as a competitor because they know they stand no chance.

Think of it in another way, if healthcare is goverment run you can actually change something with your vote.
If its run privately you have nothing to say.

Although I am a VERY strong supporter of single payer health care, I don't expect this type of healthcare reform to pass this year. I hope this type of healthcare infrastructure gets phased in, over time, since culturally and politically, this country is not capable of handling that kind of radical change yet. I DO hope, however, that at the very least we will focus HARD on reforming & regulating the insurance companies. That's a reasonable goal that would satisfy a lot of Americans I think.
