SYNOPSIS: Bob was brought to Lake Illawarra as a child for picture perfect fishing holidays. When he moved to Lake Illawarra it was like being on holidays everyday.
SCRIPT: My first contact with Lake Illawarra was in 1953 at the age of 9 years, my fathers brother had come to Lake Illawarra for his honeymoon and told him of the best fishing spot ever.
Dad, being a keen fisherman could not wait to try his luck. My dad, uncle, auntie and I arrived at the Windang Boat-shed, hired a putt, putt launch and set off into the lake. My recollection was of crystal clear water and watching fish dart in and out of the weed beds as we drifted by. The lake was surrounded by rolling green hills, a far different cry from today.
I did not return until 1967, my father set up camp on Honeymoon Island that was the newest section of the Saint George Beachcomber Caravan Park Windang. Prawns were right at the back door, my dad and his two sons in law use to used an unregistered dragnet and would catch a bucket of prawns. They kept watch for the fishing inspectors, if they saw two ghostly figures approaching with a torch they would drop the net in the water and sit on the bank until the coast was clear. Fishing was great, catches of sixty whiting a day was a daily event.
In 1976 we purchased a cabana pop top caravan, my two daughters were old enough to be water wise so we started camping at Windang council caravan park. All the family loved the life style and I loved the fishing and prawning.
In 1984 we purchased our retirement home in Kurrajong St Windang and in 1994 moved to Windang from Picnic Point Sydney, the best thing I have ever done.
In 1996 we moved from Windang to Lake South overlooking the lakes entrance.
This was like living in paradise the lake with its prawns and fish at the front door, you could say it was like a holiday every day.
