Dire Straits - Down To The Waterline

Lyrics:

Sweet surrender on the quayside
You remember we used to run and hide
In the shadow of the cargoes I take you one time
And we're counting all the numbers down to the waterline

Near misses on the dogleap stairways
French kisses in the darkened doorways
A foghorn blowing out wild and cold
A policeman shines a light upon my shoulder

Up comes a coaster fast and silent in the night
Over my shoulder all you can see are the pilot lights
No money in our jackets and our jeans are torn
Your hands are cold but your lips are warm

She can see him on the jetty where they used to go
She can feel him in the places where the sailors go
When she's walking by the river and the railway line
She can still hear him whisper
Let's go down to the waterline

  • Absolutely one of my all time favorite tunes!

  • Cold, foggy winter's night on the dimly lit steps leading down to the Quay Side in Newcastle. Weak light shining on wet cobbles - this song captures it all.

  • That my friend,is music.

  • just love this !!!!

  • why only 4 minutes long...i miss it now.

  • this is #1 in my list of Getaway Driving All Time Tunes.

  • when i worked on railroad out of hoboken terminal there used to be a chick who was kind of a railroad groupie, i guess. anyhow, i took her down to the old ferry head-house (aptly named) and went at it on one of the old ferry bridges. upon finishing i hear applause. who knew the engineers crew room looked out on that slip. man, i couldnt show my face in terminal for months!.. ths tune ALWAYS reminded me of that night.

  • Yeah....love it. When i lived in london my flat was about 500yards from the 'waterline' (thames). Dire straits had a flat in Deptford about half a mile from my flat.

great song with a moody start. This takes me back, still, to times i had then.

This first album along with 'making movies' represents, for me, their highs. The only time he gets near this sort of rythym is on 'what it is'.

  • What a great band

  • does the phrase "playing a guitar like ringing a bell" come to anyone else when they listen to the MOST EXCELLENT MUSIC!!!

  • Very good song-smooth as hell!!

  • @MrKnightcastle at least songwriters and guitar players hall of fame, if not
